b/ CARMEN REPORT FROM KALAMAZOO
CARMEN’S Director, Simon Forde, attended the annual CARA luncheon during the Kalamazoo congress at Western Michigan University, 9-12 May 2013. He reported on CARMEN’s activities to representatives of North American university centres for medieval studies and regional associations. CARMEN’S Academic Director, Gerhard Jaritz, participated in the session reporting on the ESF Eurocorecode Project on saint’s cults which was developed with CARMEN’s support. Many centres or individuals affiliated with CARMEN were present among the 3011 registered participants.
The theme of globalization is an increasingly hot topic in North American medieval circles, and the University of Birmingham’s Centre for the Study of the Middle Ages (CeSMA) organised a well attended and thought-provoking round table on the topic, particularly from the theoretical angle, and particularly through incorporating medieval sub-Saharan Africa into the dialogue. The first plenary, by Peregrine Horden (Royal Holloway University of London), also developed this theme. A number of sessions on the medieval Islamic world, and medieval India and China also took place. As a result, CARMEN hopes now to be able to bring into contact with scholars working on medieval Europe several major, specialist centres in St Petersburg, Paris and elsewhere who work on the medieval period in other continents.

b/ See the latest calls published by the European Commission in order to encourage postdoc researchers for intra- and extra-European mobility to pursue individual research projects at the premises of a different research site (university, research institute, non-profit organization, etc.) than the current one. Short summary of the calls see below.
Deadline for application: August 14, 2013.
INTRA-EUROPEAN FELLOWSHIP (IEF)
Are you an experienced researcher looking for a postdoctoral fellowship? Submit your grant application for the IEF scheme and gain the opportunity to acquire new research skills or to work in other sectors. The fellowship is designed for researchers willing to develop their career in Europe outside their home country. Applying for an IEF is a good move to broaden your horizons and improve your career prospects.
Researchers based in EU Member States or Associated Countries can apply for an IEF. You must have either a doctoral degree or at least 4 years’ full-time research experience, after obtaining a degree permitting you to embark on a doctorate. Generally, you must carry out the project on the premises of a host organisation in an EU or Associated Country other than your own. Special consideration is also given to those returning to a research career after a break.
This action aims at supporting experienced researchers of any nationality at various stages of their career, helping them in acquiring new skills (multi or interdisciplinary) and/or to undertake inter-sectoral experiences within EU member states and associated countries. New element in the last two years is the Career Restart Panel which may assist researchers to resume a career in research after a break. Proposals are submitted jointly by the host organization and the individual experienced researcher. Research fields are chosen freely by the applicants in a ‘bottom-up’ manner. Financial support will be provided to the selected proposals, for a period of 12 to 24 months full-time equivalent. Funding is provided for advanced training (including complementary skills) and trans-national mobility, on the basis of the «personal career development plan» established by the experienced researcher with her/his personal supervisor in the host organization.

INTERNATIONAL INCOMING FELLOWSHIP (IIF)
Top-class researchers from Third Countries are welcome to work on projects in Europe. This helps to develop research cooperation between Europe and other parts of the world – to everybody’s benefit. International Incoming Fellowships (IIFs) are a Marie Curie Action specially designed to encourage these moves.0
Researchers moving from Third Countries to EU Member States or Associated Countries are eligible for an IIF. To apply, you must have either a doctoral degree or at least 4 years’ full-time research experience, after obtaining a degree permitting you to embark on a doctorate. But that is the minimum. The more experience you have, the better will be your chances of being accepted for this action.
Your application for an IIF should be made in liaison with the organisation or institution that would be willing to host you in Europe. Host organisations can be universities, research centres or companies.
This action aims to attract top-class experienced researchers from third countries (fulfilling the eligibility criteria) to work and undertake research and transfer of knowledge in Europe for 1 to 2 years (incoming phase), with a view to developing mutually-beneficial research co-operation. If before the incoming phase, the experienced researcher has been active in one of the International Cooperation Partner Countries – ICPC (Annex 1 of 2013 Work Programme), a possibility is provided to assist the experienced researcher to return to this country, thus contributing to establish sustainable cooperation between these countries and European research organizations. The duration of the return phase is one year. Research fields are chosen freely by the applicants in a ‘bottom-up’ manner. Proposals are submitted jointly by the host organization and the individual experienced researcher, within the specified deadlines (if applicable and allowed, with a return host organizations in an ICPC Third Country).

INTERNATIONAL OUTGOING FELLOWSHIP (IOF)
Are you looking for funding to carry out your research abroad? You may consider applying for IOF, an international fellowship for experienced European scientists to gain new skills and expertise while conducting high-level research in a country outside Europe. The knowledge that you will acquire in a third country will then be brought back and used in Europe, with an additional funding upon your return.
IOFs are for researchers from EU Member States and Associated Countries. To apply, you must have either a doctoral degree or at least 4 years’ full-time equivalent research experience, after obtaining a degree permitting you to embark on a doctorate. But more experience is welcomed, it will not affect your chances of obtaining an IOF.
This action aims to reinforce the international dimension of the career of European experienced researchers by giving them the opportunity to be trained and acquire new knowledge in a Third Country high-level research organization. Subsequently, these experienced researchers will return with the acquired knowledge and experience to an organization in a Member State or Associated Country. Experienced researchers for this action who are nationals of a Member State or Associated Country fulfilling the eligibility criteria can apply. Research fields are chosen freely by the applicants in a ‘bottom-up’ manner. Proposals are submitted jointly by the return host organization and the individual experienced researcher within the specified deadlines. Financial support will be provided to the selected proposal, for a period of up to 36 months full-time equivalent, including an initial outgoing phase (between 12 and 24 months,) in a third country and a mandatory return phase (12 months) in a European Union Member State or Associated Country.

c/ New WorldNun Audio Services
WorldNun has been asked to provide a new service that will help prepare you for public speaking. Talking to an audience is difficult and even more so when you have to present in a language that is not your own. WordNun can now record your conference paper, or speech, in English and send it to you as an audio file so that you can hear a native English speaker read your work aloud. You can then use the recording as an audio guide which will make you feel more confident speaking the English language to a specialist audience.

d/ A call to help the cathedral in Mren in Eastern Turkey
SAVE MREN
The cathedral of Mren is now in danger of collapse. Constructed in c. 638, Mren is a masterpiece of world art and a product of the “Golden Age” of Armenian architecture. Bearing an inscription naming the Roman emperor Heraclius, and a unique sculpted relief image of Heraclius returning the True Cross to Jerusalem, Mren preserves precious material evidence for one of the most dramatic and yet poorly-documented moments in history. It is also the largest domed basilica surviving from the region, and a key example of the architectural achievements of the seventh century. But Mren may not be standing for much longer. Photographs from the 1990s to the first decade of the twenty-first century show the progressive collapse of the south façade. Now the entire south aisle is in rubble on the ground, severely compromising the domed superstructure of the monument and opening the interior and its wall painting to the elements. The prospect of stabilizing what is left is at present doubtful, however, because of Mren’s position within a military zone in eastern Turkey (Kars province) next to the closed Armenian-Turkish border. Visiting the site is forbidden. Please raise awareness of the precarious condition of this precious monument. Mren has stood for over a millennium, bearing world history on its walls. Its collapse would represent a tragic loss to human knowledge.
