Isabel Alfonso es una de las mejores estudiosas de la historia rural y política de la Edad Media europea. Es ampliamente conocida por sus contribuciones al estudio del campesinado, el conflicto social y los discursos políticos. Su investigación ha trascendido los límites de los estudios medievales, incorporando ideas de disciplinas más allá de la antropología legal, la filología y el análisis del discurso, entre otras. A lo largo de su carrera académica, Isabel Alfonso ha hecho un esfuerzo continuo para dar a conocer el trabajo de académicos internacionales en España y para comunicar los avances de la historiografía española a audiencias internacionales; y, sin embargo, la mayor parte de su propia investigación solo se ha publicado en español.
