Allow me to remind you that 2013 CARMEN Annual Meeting is approaching fast.
Currently we have over 55 participants from 22 countries coming to the meeting. We will meet in The António de Almeida Foundation in Porto, Portugal, on 13-15th September. The meeting is kindly hosted by CEPESE – Centro de Estudios da Populacao, Economia e Sociedade, Porto. Find the meeting’s programme and practical information about accommodation and getting to the meeting attached to this newsletter or on our website (for downloading, it may require switching to the Firefox engine). We hope to meet many of CARMEN members there and have a fruitful discussion on projects and future of the Medieval Studies. The meeting is open to all members, both individual and institutional, and friends of CARMEN!
The meeting’s overall theme is «The Impact in the Humanities». Particular interest will be also given to the «Portuguese world and beyond».

1. Election to Executive Committee at CARMEN Meeting in Porto (see also information attached)
This year’s CARMEN Meeting sets up the strategy for future CARMEN work through the planned election of the Executive Committee members. Positions standing open for elections are:
Academic Director, Director, Secretary, Conference Manager, and three committee members. Please, send your nominations to me by August 31, 2013. CARMEN strives to keep regional balance of the executive Committee members. We would also like to ask all the members present in Porto to participate in this very informal vote.
NB: The remaining positions are ex officio or co-opted: Forum of National Associations Officer (will be voted by members of the Forum of National Associations in Porto), Early Careers – co-opted by Executive Committee, currently Jitske Jasperse, Funding Universities Officer – co-opted by Funding Universities, currently Prof. Elisabeth M. 2. CARMEN Market Place of Projects
As usual, we will held our Market Place for projects during our Annual Meetin in Porto (scheduled for Saturday morning). We welcome information on projects and medieval studies institutions, in the form of posters, presentations, or simply sheets of paper for distribution.

3. Report from CARMEN-organised IMC Leeds Round-Table on Globalisation
On Wednesday evening, 3/7/2013, within the framework of the IMC Leeds, the CARMEN Round Table Globalising Medieval Studies took place. Moderated by Felicitas Schmieder (FernUniversität Hagen) and Elisabeth Tyler (University of York), the participants were discussing the impact of the European vision of medieval Studies on the study in other parts of the world and changing notion of geographical span of «European» Medieval Studies. Among the participants were Naomi Standen (University of Birmingham), Carole Symes (University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign), Keith Lilley (Queens College Belfast) and Simon Forde (CARMEN).

PhD Position Late Antique Historiography
As part of a shared research project in the departments of history of Ghent University (Belgium) and Groningen University (The Netherlands), one four-year PhD studentship is available at Ghent University. The project focuses on Greek and Latin antiquarian writing in late Antiquity and its cultural meaning in this period. The succesful candidate will edit fragmentary antiquarian writers in Latin and Greek from the fourth to the sixth century.
You possess a good master?s degree in History, Classics, or a related discipline (or will possess one by 1/1/2014) and an excellent knowledge of Latin and Greek. You have an interest in historiography and literature, and are open to theoretical approaches. You are able to work independently, whilst also a team player. Your tasks include:
completion of a PhD within four years, the co-organisation of a
conference, limited amounts of teaching, and occasional assistance with other research carried out in the project. Acquaintance with Byzantine studies and/or early medieval Latin constitute an advantage.
We offer you the possibility to work as part of a high-quality and large group of scholars working on late antique, early medieval and Byzantine history and literature at a leading university of Belgium, a scholarship of approx. 1600 euro (net) per month, further training in our Doctoral School, and the possibility to study one year or semester abroad (depending on additional funding).

4. Two positions in the University of Melbourne and two in the University of Western Australia
The University of Melbourne (two positions): Applications are invited for the following full-time fixed term Postdoctoral Fellow positions with the ARC Centre of Excellence for the History of Emotions.
Postdoctoral Fellow (Three year appointment – Position number 0031917): In collaboration with the School of Historical and Philosophical Studies, University of Melbourne, the Centre seeks to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to contribute to research projects in the history of emotions (Europe, 1100-1800). Working together with Professor Charles Zika and the Change Program of the Centre, the successful candidate will develop a project exploring the impact of deeply felt emotional experiences and rhetoric in stimulating and shaping group understanding and response to disasters faced by Europeans between the late fifteenth and the late seventeenth centuries. The project might focus on responses to such phenomena as plague, fire or war, or natural disasters such as earthquake, famine or flood. It might explore such ritual, literary and/ or visual responses as mechanisms for achieving relief or solidarity when facing the terrifying the impact of destructive events, and the immediate as well as longer term implications for models of communal life, organisation and meaning. Postdoctoral Fellow (Three year appointment – Position number 0031918): In collaboration with the School of Culture and Communication at The University of Melbourne, the Centre seeks to appoint a Postdoctoral Fellow to a three-year research appointment in one of its four research programs, «Shaping the Modern Program.» Working with the program convenor, Professor Stephanie Trigg, and Senior Research Fellow, Dr Grace Moore, the successful candidate will develop a multi-disciplinary research project on emotions and the environment that extends the Centre’s research in the period 1100-1800 into the modern era, with a special emphasis on Australia’s relationship with its European emotional past, and the emotional continuities and discontinuities between pre-modern Europe and Australian settler culture. Research Associate (Postdoctoral Fellow): Emotions in Literature (Three year appointment – Job no. 492581) – the successful candidate will propose and work on a well-formulated, significant and original project concerning emotions in literature or drama in English between 1500 and 1800, preferably leading to a monograph, under the supervision of Winthrop Professor Bob White, Programme Leader for ‘Meanings’ in the ARC Centre of excellence for the History of Emotions at the University of Western Australia.

Research Associate (Postdoctoral Fellow): Passions for Learning (Two year appointment – Job no. 492582) – the successful candidate will work under the leadership of Professor Yasmin Haskell at the University of Western Australia in the ‘Passions for Learning’ project. The broad aims of this project are to explore the role of the emotions in European education and knowledge cultures, 1100-1800.
As Research Associate you will have a PhD in early modern intellectual, religious, cultural, and/or literary history, and proficiency in Latin. Reading competence in one or more of: German, French, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch will be well regarded. Scholars with research interests spanning European and non-European (for example, Asian) cultures are especially encouraged to apply. In addition to publishing the results of your own research, you will involve yourself fully in the life of the project (including conference organization, editing of collected volumes).
